Mar 18, 2020 · A need for four-axle muscle to move important trains on CN’s eastern end prompted the arrival of the road’s GP40-2L. GMD’s GP40-2 production prior to Canadian National’s order amounted to a trio of examples for Toronto’s GO Transit.

Dec 20, 2024 · GP40-2L. There were a number of spinoffs in the GP40 line; perhaps most notable was Canadian National's GP40-2L (or GP40-2LW). Featuring CN's own custom-designed comfort, or safety cab, the model sported a wide cab design which would later become standard on EMD models as the "North American cab" first applied to Union Pacific's SD60Ms of 1989.

Jan 11, 2014 · GP40-2L rides higher on a CN-designed special lightweight frame, which allowed for a larger fuel tank. Both have the original 4 window Canadian Comfort Cab and were ordered exclusively by CN, who bought nearly 300 (most without dynamic brakes).

The EMD (Electro-Motive Division) GP40-2 is a type of four-axle, 16-cylinder, 3,000hp (though, sometimes rated at 3,200hp) diesel locomotive built by the Electro Motive Division of General Motors (GM) from 1972 to 1986.

The GP40-2 was EMD’s follow-up to the very successful GP40 locomotive model. While many internal upgrades were introduced (such as the use of improved, modular Dash 2 electrical components), there were some external differences between the early production GP40-2 and late-production GP40.

These eleven locomotives were designated GP40-2Ls. The GP40-2Ls used the same popular GP-40 locomotive model of the GP40TCs, but ignored the GP40TC's unique features and added some changes of their own. The GP40-2Ls made use of the safety cab and Dash-2 electronics that General Motors had introduced soon after the GP40TCs were purchased.
