Goma is a city in the eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo. It is the capital and largest city of the North Kivu Province; it is located on the northern shore of Lake Kivu and shares borders with the Bukumu Chiefdom to the north, Rwanda to the east and the Masisi Territory to the west.

GOMA, Congo (AP) — Thousands fled the city of Goma on Monday as fighting raged between Congolese forces and rebels backed by neighboring Rwanda, who claimed to have captured eastern Congo’s largest regional hub.

The M23 rebels — the most prominent of more than 100 armed groups vying for control of Congo’s mineral-rich east — captured Goma, the region’s largest city in late January in a major escalation of the yearslong fighting with government forces.

Goma är huvudstad i provinsen Norra Kivu i östra delen av Kongo-Kinshasa, och är belägen vid gränsen till Rwanda, vid Kivusjöns norra strand. Folkmängden uppgår till cirka 600 000 invånare (2019).
