Feb 10, 2010 · When I'm building rail and style doors ( 5 piece doors) , I have a squaring table I use to glue up and clamp that type of door. Its built out of a piece of 3/4" plywood with a hard maple edge to align the doors pieces.

Jan 22, 2025 · As Lataxe said, the answer depends on whether the panels are plywood (glue them in) or solid wood (they must float in the grooves.) For medium to wide panels, I recommend 3/8" grooves with 1/4" of panel in each groove, leaving a 1/8" gap at each side.

Fir a solid wood door you fasten a strip slightly thicker than the door and then plane it down to a match. If you use screws to clamp the wood while the glue sets, remember to remove the screws. It makes later cutting of the strip for height adjustments of the door height a lot easier.

There are issues with solid wood panels concerning movement. There's also the labor of jointing the sections to be glued, selecting suitable looking pieces to glue up, clamping up, and sanding flat.
