After selling Ginetta, brothers Trevor and Ivor Walklett went on to form a new company called Design And Research Engineering (DARE) with the intent of manufacturing new copies of some of Ginetta's old designs, like the G4 and G12 – for which there were considerable demand, particularly in Japan.

Its engine is a naturally aspirated petrol, 1.6 litre, single overhead camshaft 4 cylinder with 2 valves per cylinder. It develops 158 bhp (160 PS/118 kW) of power at 7500 rpm, and maximum torque of 170 N·m (125 lb·ft/17.3 kgm) at 5500 rpm.

Petit was a designer at the Ford headquarters in the USA and decided to build a sports car as a project to attain his Masters degree. He was seconded to the Ford HQ in England in 1966 a few miles from the Ginetta factory and chose the G12 as the basis for his project.

The G4 and the G12 are possibly the best known Ginettas. The G12 was one of the early mid-engined cars that would win races over-all. Quick and agile are the best terms to describe the car. Such was the reputation of the G12 that the re-body of one car was carried out at Ford Motor Co.
