Some women experience being called “gifted” as an uncomfortable burden, and will avoid even allowing the thought they may, in fact, be gifted. One fairly common reaction is feeling oneself to be an “impostor.”

If women do not recognize their potential, they often do not fulfill it. In this study, it was found that these gifted women selected mediocre and gender stereotypic jobs, usually due to pressure from parents and teachers.

Gifted and talented people may hide to fit in better. To avoid being seen as too weird or different, and to fit in better with others, gifted people often learn to stifle or cover up their unusual cognitive and other abilities, which can lead to an enduring pattern of hiding.

May 3, 2022 · I'm curious to know the experiences of gifted women and how their giftedness has possibly clashed with gender roles, societal and familial expectations of how women should be, friendships with non-gifted female friends etc.

Growing up as an exceptional, gifted person has many pleasures and perils, and whether we are male or female (not to mention transgender) may have deep impacts on values, interests and ways we realize our multiple potentials.
