The LNER classified the Belpaire locomotives as J17. The GER started to rebuild round-topped J16s as Belpaire J17s in 1921. Forty-six J16s remained at Grouping (1923), and all had been rebuilt by 1932. The GER started to fit superheaters to the Belpaire J17s in 1915.

A total of thirty new Belpaire 0-6-0s (GER Class G58) were built in three batches between 1905 and 1911. No. 1138 was then included in GER Class G58. The LNER classified the Belpaire locomotives as J17.

GER started fitting superheaters to the G48s in 1915 and installed the same combination of Belpaire fireboxes and superheaters in F48s in 1921; see Locobase 10163. At Grouping in 1923, the LNER classified these as J17s.

65567 was built at Stratford Works as GER 1217 in May 1905 as a GER class F48 (LNER class 16) locomotive. It was fitted with a superheated boiler and had a vacuum ejector fitted in September 1923 and reclassified as a LNER class J17 engine.

A total of 30 GER G58s (J17s) were built from new and fitted with superheated Belpaire boilers between 1905 and 1911. The other 60 J17s were rebuilt from J16 (F48) locomotives, which originally had round-top boilers, between 1921 and 1932.

Nov 30, 2024 · Ex-GER LNER J17 0-6-0 65560 at Kings Lynn, in September 1960. The loco had entered service in 1905, and was withdrawn in June 1962, and scrapped. One example was preserved.
