Georg Pencz (c. 1500 – 11 October 1550) was a German engraver, painter and printmaker. [1] Pencz was probably born in Westheim near Bad Windsheim/Franconia. He travelled to Nuremberg in 1523 and joined Albrecht Dürer’s atelier.

Painter, copperplate engraver and draftsman, strongly influenced by Italian painting, can be considered to be a successor of Durer´s. Highly appreciated as a portraitist by the Nuremberg Council. _________________________________

Feb 21, 2024 · One of the "Little Masters" who made tiny, intricate, and influential prints, Georg Pencz always retained the influence of Albrecht Dürer, whose Nuremberg workshop he entered in 1523. Pencz also kept up with current trends in Italy, varying his style throughout his career.

Jan 8, 2013 · 'Georg Pencz, without equal in the art of drawing…' This posthumous praise was inscribed on a picture frame in dedication to the Nuremberg artist Georg Pencz (ca. 1500 to 1550) around ten years after his death.

Just before his death, Pencz was appointed the court painter for Albert, Duke of Prussia (1490 – 1568), but past on before completing any work. Of his important portraits are Portrait of a Seated Youth, or Portrait of a Young Man, from 1544 and now in the Uffizi Gallery.
