Apr 12, 2022 · Genki starts out easy and builds up easily (the exception here is lesson 3 which introduces the present polite present tense [verb + masu] which, how it's explained in genki, is probably the hardest lesson in the whole book, so don't quit right here). Jan 15, 2015 · Well first, I would suggest using what the Kana says in the book, not the romaji. The Romaji that Genki uses is what is called Kunrei-Shiki, and basically it shows you phonetically how it is pronounced, rather than in a direction 1-to-1 corrospondence of the Kana, where おう makes a lengthened "oo" sound rather than dipthonging "ou".

You need to develop your comprehension. The best sources of input in the book are the conversations and the reading section towards the end of the book. Your goal is to be able to understand them properly, which includes meaning, vocabulary, grammar, etc. Make sure to relisten to the dialogs regularly for a while. The rest is optional.

Sep 2, 2022 · From my understanding, Genki is not a self-study book. It's designed to be used as a textbook in a classroom. There is a YouTube channel (ToKini Andy) that actually walks you through each lesson so you can get that classroom-like feel, but there are parts of the book that have you break off with other students. I'm not sure how that's handled.

JFZ focusses more on self-study at home, Genki more on school classes (e.g. there are a lot exercises where you need a partner). JFZ has an easier start, Genki is more demanding in my opinion.
