Genie's father mostly grew up in orphanages in the American Pacific Northwest. His father was killed by a lightning strike, and his mother ran a brothel while infrequently seeing him. Additionally, his mother gave him a feminine first name, which made him the target of constant derision.

Genie’s parents were arrested and charged with abuse. The charges against Irene Wiley were dismissed in 1975 after her attorney argued that she too was a victim of her husband’s abuse and had never been willfully cruel to Genie.
