Jan 8, 2016 · If true, from the meter shown that would be a change of around 300 cubic feet, or about 3 therms. You can check your gas bill to see how many therms per month you are averaging. During my peak heating days, I can use that much, so it's not unreasonable. For the meter to record 10000 cubic feet change in a day (or to run backward) is unreasonable.

Since every appliance has an independent cut off valve, I closed all those and the gas meter shutoff valve, used a bicycle tire pump to pressurize the system to 30 psi and waited. If the whole system does not hold pressure for hours and hours, there is a leak somewhere. At the end, the worst leak offender was the test gauge itself.

It (obviously) cannot hang off the meter itself, its struts or pipes, and so it will need its own independent support.

The meter was disconnected when he tested the pipe. He stuck a screw driver in the soil to use as a ground and then put the multi meters red lead on the pipe to show .4 volts.

You should contact the utility, and let them decide how to proceed. In most places the utility owns the meter, and is responsible for maintaining and/or replacing them.

Shutting the main off even during the time the meter is being read won't trigger an inspection. In Earthquake prone areas some home owners have a wrench attached to the pipe so if there is a concern about leaks the main can be quickly turned off.
