The EMD GP9 is a four-axle diesel-electric locomotive built by General Motors' Electro-Motive Division between 1954 and 1959. The GP9 succeeded the GP7 as the second model of EMD's General Purpose (GP) line, [1] incorporating a new sixteen- cylinder engine which generated 1,750 horsepower (1.30 MW). [2] .

In the late 1980s, the GTW decided to rebuild a portion of its aging GP9 fleet, which even then was the backbone of the Trunk's fleet, into modern GP9-equivalents. Original GTW units, along with some that had been reassigned from the Central Vermont and Grand Trunk Railways, were selected to be rebuilt.

They were, of course, most often used in freight assignments, but were also available with optional steam generators for passenger or freight assignments. Starting in 1970, the SP GP9's entered various rebuilding programs, emerging as rebuilt GP9E's and GP9R's while the SSW rebuilds began in 1974. Some were renumbered and reclassified as heavy yard switchers. While some GP9's were never rebuilt.
