GOES-R Series, provides advanced imagery and atmospheric measurements of Earth’s weather, oceans and environment, real-time mapping of lightning activity, and improved monitoring of solar activity and space weather. The first satellite in the series, GOES-R, was launched in 2016 and was renamed GOES-16 upon reaching geostationary orbit.

May 23, 2024 · The GOES-R Series is a four satellite program, which maintains two operational satellites at all times, as well as third standby satellite in “storage mode” on-orbit as a ready spare. GOES-R (GOES-16, GOES-East) launched in November 2016, replacing GOES-13.
