The T18 is a renowned, heavy-duty truck transmission designed for and used in ½, 3/4 and 1+ ton trucks. They are found in Ford, Jeep and IH trucks. The T18 is the improved successor to the T98 transmission. The T18 was made for automotive use by Borg-Warner Gear from 1965 to 1991.

Apr 4, 2023 · Ford offered the T18 in 2WD and 4WD applications with a six-bolt pattern often labeled the “butterfly” due to how the holes were shaped on the casing. Early versions of the T18 had a unique shift pattern with the reverse setting located over and up near the third gear.

There are generally two styles of output for the 2WD version of the Ford T-18, the long slip yoke style shown in the top picture and a short regular yoke style. The 4WD versions of the Ford T-18 tend to use long adapters and 31 spline outputs.

Dec 13, 2009 · A T18 is a good strong trans. The only downside to them is the pivot pin groove in the shift lever tends to wear making gear selection a process of " poke and hope ". If the problem is repaired early enough replacement of the shift lever is all that's required.
