Are there any difference between years for Timing covers
Apr 21, 2008 · The water pump backing plate has round holes in it, they're not shaped like the ones in the timing cover, so the water pump doesn't care what timing cover it's bolted to. As an example, I'm running a timing cover from a 1970 351W (standard rotation water pump) on a 1987 block, with a reverse rotation water pump bolted to it.

Sep 22, 2009 · To do this I have a timing cover from a 1966 289. My problem is that there are two alignment pegs coming out from the block that keep the older timing cover from sitting flush to the block. Should I drill the old timing cover or should i try to take the alignment pegs out? Any help or advice would be appreciated.

Feb 14, 2011 · It could also be leaking where the timing cover mates with the front of the block as coolant runs through a passage of the timing cover on both sides into the block. The best way to know for sure is as stated by mccance is to pressurize the cooling system via a radiator pressure tester and visually observe where the leak is coming from.

Oct 28, 2008 · In your case I would recommend removing the timing cover and replacing the seal. I'm not a fan of replacing that round seal with the cover in place because there is no way to support the back of the cover while you tap the seal in place, which can take some fairly hard taps. There is some risk of cracking the cover.

Aug 31, 2010 · I've got a 71 mustang with a 302, the 302 is out of a 68 mustang. The only place I can see it going is on the passenger side. There's so much stuff in the way on the drivers side that I can't even see the timing cover or balancer.

Jun 16, 2009 · The correct waterpump for the 69 302 has the inlet on the left side, (Facing the engine). The timing pointer is on the opposite side. In 1970 the waterpump inlet was changed to the right side, where it remains to this day. 1970 was also the year that the harmonic balancer and crankshaft pulley went from 3 mounting bolts to four.
