Fishers are small, cat-like mammals native to North America. These little carnivores are not closely related to cats at all. Instead, they are members of the Mustelidae family, along with weasels, otters, wolverines, badgers, and more. This species’ closest relative is the American marten. Fishers are, however, larger than martens.

Commonly seen animals include raccoons, rabbits, squirrels, and skunks. A quiet walk in the forest or desert, a keen eye and a good pair of binoculars will reward you with glimpses of some of our more secretive animals.

Fishers are found in forests and riparian corridors with moderate to dense canopy cover and diverse structural stages and plant communities. They use cavities in live or dead standing trees for den sites. Fishers prey on small mammals, including snowshoe hares and porcupines.

Mar 8, 2024 · Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife’s (ODFW) Wildlife Research staff in southwest Oregon captured, collared and released a fisher (Pekania pennanti), a carnivorous mammal native to North America.

Both the Bureau of Land Management and Forest Service in Oregon and Washington have the fisher listed as a sensitive species. Additionally, the northern California/southern Oregon Distinct Population Segment (DPS) is currently under review for federal listing.
