He was eventually captured by the Chinese, escaped, was captured by the Japanese, escaped (being I think the only European in either world war to escape from the Japanese home islands) and took ship for Europe.

No idea why he would have been in the Dorsetshire other than I believe they may have been in Jersey at the time, perhaps when the Militia in Jersey was suspended in early 1917.
