Union Pacific 844 is a class "FEF-3" 4-8-4 "Northern" type steam locomotive owned and operated by the Union Pacific Railroad for its heritage fleet. Built in December 1944 by the American Locomotive Company (ALCO) of Schenectady, New York, No. 844 is one of four surviving FEF series locomotives and the only one in operation.

Four FEF series locomotives survive, including No. 844, which remains in operational condition and runs in excursion service. The 844 is one of the Union Pacific 's oldest serving locomotives [3] and the only steam locomotive never retired by a North American Class I railroad. [4]

But it’s one accomplished by the last steam locomotive ever delivered new to Union Pacific, FEF-3 4-8-4 844, which was built 80 years ago this month. It’s no wonder why the railroad has dubbed this Northern type locomotive “The Living Legend.”

UP 844 is a FEF-3″ 4-8-4 “Northern” Type locomotive, which entered service in December 1944. It was the very last steam locomotive to be delivered to Union Pacific. This locomotive operated in revenue service until 1959, when it was finally retired.

These were designated Class FEF-1 and were designed by UP's Motive Power Group to have 77" drivers, 24.5 x 32 cylinders, a boiler pressure of 300 psi, and a weight of 465,000 lbs resulting in a tractive effort of 63,611 pounds (63,800 nominal).

Today, FEF-3 #844 (at some times during history also known as #8444 to avoid numbering conflictions with a diesel loco) survives to pull excursion trains as a publicity locomotive for the Union Pacific, and is one the UP’s oldest operating locmotives.
