Quite a extensive line-up of different railways and engine models sits at IRM by the locomotive shop. Metra F7 308 sits by the IRM depot.

Metra 308 is a passenger locomotive known as a “cab unit.” It was built for the Chicago & North Western as freight locomotive 4083C and was used in general freight service. In 1961 it was rebuilt for use pulling bi-level commuter trains in the Chicago area and renumbered C&NW 414.

Mar 24, 2025 · Synopsis: Built in November 1949, GM EMD F7A, EMD order number E1188A, builder's number 8571, as C&NW 4083C for freight service. In 1959 regeared from 62:15 (65 mph) to 57:20 (95 mph) and a 480 VAC Cummins Head-End-Power diesel generator set added, and assigned to Chicago suburban commuter service.

Generally, the F7 was equipped with a 62:15 gear ratio for freight service, offering a top speed of 65 mph. However, for passenger assignments they were geared for higher speeds (65:12). In all, EMD offered the model in eight different gear ratios, ranging from 56:21 (passenger) to 65:12 (freight). Rio Grande F7A #5754 in Denver, Colorado.

This boxy rebuilt CF7 unit started out as ATSF F7A #308 before being rebuilt into this boxy CF7 unit. Great paint scheme was used on these early INRD units. Although the name was blurry, I believe this slide was taken by George H. Merge.
