WM GP9 5940 formally a C&O GP9 before being transfered to the WM during the Chessie era. It was donated to the City of Cumberland by CSX in 1986 and is now leased to the Virginia Central in Staunton, VA. The B&O Museum in Baltimore, Md. has a good collection of WM equipment.

Great Walton Rail train, having picked up the empty woodchip hoppers from NS, is preparing to return north to Covington. Brakemen 'Buzz' is guiding chop nosed GP-9 #6400 backwards as it retrieves empty covered hoppers at the feed mill. It is now preserved in its original Western Maryland paint scheme on the Georges Creek Railway in Maryland.

Wearing one of the Chessie System paint schemes, this EMD low nose GP9 was delivered as WM #43 before the merger. It continued as Chessie #6417 until being traded back to EMD in 1983. Date of the photo is approximate.

Creek Railroad someday. The Geep was purchased by Gerald Altizer, a Western Maryland RR fan, and the ceo of the George's Creek.

Shades of the 50's and 60's, ex-WM GP9 #25 rests at the Western Maryland Scenic Railroad's station in Cumberland, MD on a sunny Sunday afternoon. The unit, privately owned by the Georges Creek RR in MD, contracted out the painting and maintence of this venerable WM locomotive to the WM Scenic.

The Western Maryland was assigned 25 ex-C&O GP9s in 1976 after the Chessie merger. These units were never given a full WM paint treatment, but received a half-hearted WM relettering and retained their C&O numbers. When repainted into the Chessie paint scheme they also retained their C&O/WM numbers.

Nov 22, 2023 · #25 WM's first GP9 was first to be chop-nosed; a two-piece windshield was applied. All subsequent chop-nosed units had a one-piece windshield applied. I always thought the WM units had nice lines.

#5961 therefore is a Phase II GP9. It was transferred from the C&O to the WM in Dec 1976 and hastily relettered for the WM. Since the unit was painted in the C&O blue and yellow scheme, the relettering created one of the few blue and yellow WM units.
