Eshton Moor, previously known as Gargrave Cross Country, is a scenic running event organized by Wharfedale Harriers. The race features a 5-mile out-and-back course along the Pennine Way, offering participants a challenging route with a total elevation gain of 550 feet.

Aug 10, 2021 · IT was perhaps fitting that a race taking in part of the Pennine Way was treated to the classic Yorkshire August weather of wind and rain. So, the scene was set for a dark and moody evening race in the heart of the Craven Countryside.

It starts with a gentle climb up the long field before picking up the path of the Pennine Way. It follows this over Eshton Moor, down and across the river then around the wood before heading back the same way with a climb back over Eshton Moor.

A circular walk from Gargrave along the Pennine Way going over Eshton Moor to Airton. Return by Bell Busk using field paths and tracks.

Arriving at a finger sign marking a crossroads of paths, the Pennine Way here runs over Eshton Moor, the name of which is a misnomer. Continuing north-west over pasture, the path converges with a road, with Newfield Hall not far ahead. Turning through a gate, the River Aire is crossed by a footbridge then followed upstream.

Cross diagonally over 8 field fields crossing Harrows Hills and Eshton Moor looking out for stiles and footpath signs. The path eventually meets River Aire near the road. Cross the river (more of a stream actually) by means of the foot bridge and continue on the left bank until road reached near Newfield Bridge.

In the afternoon the Way crosses the low ridge of Eshton Moor, rich farming country rather than rough grasslands, and then wends it way along the upper Aire valley to the amazing limestone scenery of Malham.
