The Bida Emirate is a traditional state in Nigeria, a successor to the old Nupe Kingdom, with its headquarters in Bida, Niger State. The head of the emirate is the Etsu Nupe, who is the leader of the Nupe people. [1]

He was the first emir in Bida to become Etsu Nupe ("King of Nupe"). He introduced this title in 1856, during his second term as emir, defeating his rival Malam Umar Bahaushe, a Fulani man. The title was proclaimed during the civil war of Nupe in 1847, which lasted until 1856. [6][7][8]

Bida’s emir resides in a palace outside the town’s west gate. Modern Bida is well known for its crafts, notably brass and copper goblets, other metal products, glass beads and bangles, raffia hats and mats, and locally dyed cotton and silk cloth.

Emir Usman Zaki proclaimed himself etsu Nupe in 1835; and, after defeating Umar Bahaushe, a rival Fulani emir, in the Nupe civil war (1847–56) at Bida, he named Bida to replace the emirate’s old capital at Raba (Rabba), 67 miles (110 km) west.
