Transmission-line pulse - Wikipedia
In electrical engineering, transmission-line pulse (TLP) is a way to study integrated circuit technologies and circuit behavior in the current and time domain of electrostatic discharge (ESD) events. The concept was described shortly after WWII in pp. 175–189 of Pulse Generators, Vol. 5 of the MIT Radiation Lab Series.
Standard TLP are based on 50 Ohm impedance, while other ESD model are based on different impedance system so the voltage applied before device fully turn-on could be very different and cause different failure types.
TLP, TLP and long pulse TLP. ESD APPLICATIONS OF TLP The most common application of TLP is the characterization of devices to see how they behave during standard ESD stresses, like HBM. A typical example is the 100 ns TLP characterization of a grounded-gate NMOST (ggNMOST), one of the workhorses in the field of ESD protections.
What does a TLP waveform look like? What variations are there for TLP waveforms? How do these variations affect the TLP test? What kinds of packages can be tested? How is a TLP waveform generated? What happens when the waveform hits the DUT? How is resistance measured with a TLP pulse? Why use both a Voltage probe and a Current probe?
TLP is an abbreviation of Transmission Line Pulse method of generating a test pulse. It is produced by discharging a charged transmission line to produce a flat top pulse. The Transmission Line Pulse test waveform is compared with the HBM test pulse as shown in figure 2.
