The EMD GP20 is a 4-axle diesel-electric locomotive built by General Motors' Electro-Motive Division between November 1959 and April 1962. Power was provided by an EMD 16-567D2 16- cylinder turbocharged engine which generated 2,000 horsepower (1,500 kW).

Sep 7, 2022 · The EMD GP20 model was born out of the necessity by EMD to get greater horsepower out of a diesel locomotive. During the late 1950s, trains became heavier, schedules tighter, and there was a call for locomotives with more horsepower.

The EMD GP20C-ECO is a 2,000-horsepower (1,500 kW) B-B diesel-electric locomotive built by EMD. Although similar to the EMD GP22ECO, the GP20C-ECO follows Canadian Pacific's request for crashworthiness and EPA emission standards with the "C" in the designation denoting crashworthiness of the cab, frame, and fuel tank.

Even after purchasing 30 of EMD's GP20s in 1960, numbered as UP 700-729, UP initiated a program to equip still more of its 300 series GP9s with EMD's turbocharger, completing a total of 63 units by 1965, including 30 GP9A units and 33 GP9B units, all in the 300-349B number series.
