The EMD E6 was a 2,000-horsepower (1,500 kW), A1A-A1A, streamlined passenger train locomotive manufactured by Electro-Motive Corporation, and its corporate successor, General Motors Electro-Motive Division, of La Grange, Illinois.

Dec 19, 2024 · Internally and externally the E6 varied little from the E5 with dual headlights and the classic slant nose. More than a dozen Class I railroads purchased the E6 with more than 100 A and B units built (in total).

EMD E-units were a line of passenger train streamliner diesel locomotives built by the General Motors Electro-Motive Division (EMD) and its predecessor the Electro-Motive Corporation (EMC). Final assembly for all E-units was in La Grange, Illinois. Production ran from May 1937, to December, 1963.

Along with its iconic FT series, the E series was developed primarily for passenger service and would become one of the principal diesel-electric models to spell the end for steam. The design was first developed in the 1930s as the EA, featuring a slant-nose and sweeping carbody.

EMD E3A, E6A & E6B Diesel Units Atlantic Coast Line . The Atlantic Coast Line trailed its rival, the Seaboard Air Line by almost a year in receiving its first diesel locomotives, but would soon pass them in total ownership of early EMC locomotives.

With these gorgeous and fine running E6 models, BLI finally finished off their "EMD E's in dribs and drabs" project (following on the heels of their equally impressive 2009 E7 and E8 units). As of this writing, BLI has not (for whatever reason) released any DC-only E6's.

A third unit, a new E6, was built in December of 1940 and was assigned to The Champion between Jacksonville and Miami. In February of 1942, the FEC received an additional A-B-A set of 2000 horsepower E6 locomotives (1004-1051-1005) from Electro-Motive for service on joint FEC-ACL train, The Florida Special.

Nov 26, 2022 · The first set was delivered to Southern in May of that year with Southern road number 6100; it was the original FT demonstrator, reconditioned by Electro-Motive (now EMD) following its 11-month, 35-state barnstorming tour in 1939-1940.
