Dec 1, 2013 · Using this software, we have determined the DQE curves of four direct electron detectors currently available: the Gatan K2 Summit, the FEI Falcon I and II, and the Direct Electron DE-12, under a variety of total dose and dose rate conditions.

Dec 1, 2014 · Three direct electron detectors offer better DQE than film at 300 keV. Recorded 300 keV electron events on the detectors have very similar Landau distributions. The Gatan K2 Summit detector has the highest DQE at low spatial frequency. The FEI Falcon II detector has the highest DQE beyond one half the Nyquist frequency.

The K2XP sensor offers a boost in performance of the K2 Summit camera across all spatial frequencies. Shown above is the DQE curve for the K2® Summit direct detection camera in super-resolution mode using the original K2 sensor and the new K2XP sensor.

DQE is the best parameter for characterizing the real performance of an imaging system. K2’s superior DQE results in the highest detectability of small, low-contrast objects.

May 5, 2013 · Determination of DQE. DQEs of the K2 Summit in both the linear and super-resolution–counting modes were measured by knife-edge images recorded at an acceleration voltage of 300 kV.

Defined as the squared ratio of the output to input signal-to-noise ratio (S/N) 2OUT / (S/N) 2IN, DQE effectively quantifies how much noise and signal degradation occurs within the detector. An ideal detector would have a DQE of 1, indicating perfect efficiency with no added noise.

By bypassing the traditional phosphor scintillator and fiber optic coupling, these cameras have greatly enhanced sensitivity and detective quantum efficiency (DQE). Of the three currently available commercial cameras, the Gatan K2 Summit was designed specifically for counting individual electron events.

Comparison of DQE at 300 keV plotted against spatial frequency for various direct electron detectors, including the DE-20, Falcon II, and K2 Summit models. The DQE performance of traditional photographic film is also shown for reference.

We find that all three detectors have a better DQE than film. The K2 Summit has the best DQE at low spatial frequencies but with increasing spatial frequency its DQE falls below that of the Falcon II.
