A year ago, u/Badwolf_3 and I ( u/Trentillating) started playtesting a project to fix the huge lack of humanoid, NPC stat blocks for D&D 5e. We called the project Essential NPCs . With the help of r/UnearthedArcana , we've been playtesting these stat blocks for the last year, and now the whole collection is ready for release.

Dec 6, 2019 · To simplify management of these NPCs' spells, you can ignore all of their spells except those listed under their "Actions." This changes the Challenge Rating of the NPC accordingly: the artillerist's CR becomes 1 (200 XP), the alchemist's CR becomes 2 (450 XP), and the battle smith's CR becomes 4 (1,100 XP).

Ability scores listed horizontally, like the Monster Manual, which I need in order to really comprehend a character. More room for tools and ongoing notes.

An NPC will not, however, have to roll ability/skill checks to get the PCs to do something for that NPC – that is, an NPC does not have to roll a persuasion check to get the PCs to go on a quest for them.

Mar 24, 2015 · Expertise for a level 1 character/npc would be a +4 to the skill, thus keeping them on par with most proficient level 10-14 adventurers with similar stats. This is a great balancing factor in low level npc's that deal with high-level PC's, and still gives a great reason that the King doesn't fight his own fights (hiring adventurers instead).

Apr 20, 2020 · The PCs bump into a large rough-looking woman in a simple tunic. The NPC was walking in the opposite direction to the party. The PCs are a little edgy and scold the NPC, the NPC has a gruff tone and is apologetic. The PCs ask the NPC where they can buy armour, the NPC doesn't know and isn't interested in arms and armour.

The party will start to feel like they're in a passenger seat while the pet NPC drives. It's even worse if the DM uses the NPC to railroad the party into encounters the DM is trying to force on them...
