What is a Diode? – Engineering Cheat Sheet
May 3, 2024 · A diode is a semiconductor device that allows current to flow in one direction serving as a one-way current switch. Diodes, also called rectifiers, convert alternating current (AC) into pulsating direct current (DC). They are categorized by type, voltage, and current capacity.

Diode Equation for I-V Curve. The I-V curve (diode characteristic curve) can be find by the following no linear equations. This equation is also known as Ideal Equation of Diode or Diode Law. i = I S ( e qv/k T – 1 ) Where: i = Current flowing through the diode; I s = Reverse or dark saturation current (Typical value for silicon is 10-12 Amperes)

Diodes are two-terminal electronic devices, made out of a semiconductor materials. Silicon is the most common semiconductor, but there are others, like germanium, gallium arsenide (GaAs), indium phosphide (InP), gallium nitride (GaN), and many others.
Diodes are basically electrical check valves. They allow current to flow freely in one direction, but not the other. Check valves require a small forward pressure to open the valve. Similarly, a diode requires a small forward voltage (bias) to "turn on". This is called the forward voltage drop.
In a Full Wave Rectifier two diodes act to rectify both positive and negative cycles. A transformer is generally used to isolate the 120VAC (20A) from the secondary. 1. On the positive halfcycle C1,C2,C,C4 charge to +Us thru D2 and D4. D1 and D3 are blocking. 2. On the negative halfcycle C1,C3, charge to -Us, but C2 and C4 can not discharge.
