De Mond is a beautiful coastal nature reserve at the mouth of the Heuningnes River. It lies about 26km south-east of Bredasdorp on the south-western Cape coast, between Arniston and Struisbaai and is a World Heritage Site. De Mond offers fantastic whale-watching opportunities in spring, when these gentle giants come to breed and nurse their calves.

The De Mond Nature Reserve, in the Overberg between Struisbaai and Arniston, Western Cape, South Africa, [2] has been a Ramsar site wetland since 1986. [3] The reserve covers the mouth of the Heuningnes River and covers 918 ha (2,270 acres). [4] Shifting dunes block the river's mouth and serve as a breeding ground for various species of birds.

This restored veld cottage, situated on the seaside portion of De Mond farm, is approximately 600 metres before the entrance gate to Cape Nature's unspoilt De Mond Nature Reserve - a must for the nature lover interested in coastal fynbos, birds, hiking, photography and fishing.

De Mond is a haven for sea birds, including the African black oystercatcher, the damara and Caspian tern and the blue crane. In spring, De Mond offers whale-watching opportunities, though sightings are not guaranteed. Visitors can cool off in the sea’s crashing waves or in the Heuningnes estuary.
