Cyclic olefin copolymer (COC) is an amorphous polymer made by several polymer manufacturers. COC is a relatively new class of polymers as compared to commodities such as polypropylene and polyethylene. This newer material is used in a wide variety of applications including packaging films, lenses, vials, displays, and medical devices.

In organic chemistry, a cycloalkene or cycloolefin is a type of alkene hydrocarbon which contains a closed ring of carbon atoms and either one or more double bonds, but has no aromatic character. Some cycloalkenes, such as cyclobutene and cyclopentene, can be used as monomers to produce polymer chains. [1]

Cyclic olefin (co-)polymer provides a high-temperature alternative to acrylic. Its refractive index and transmittance are similar but the heat distortion temperature is about 30°C higher than for acrylic. It has a remarkably low water absorption value of less than 0.01% (compared with Polycarbonate 0.2% and PMMA 0.3%).
