Aug 11, 2022 · Corfe Castle is a fortification standing above the village of the same name on the Isle of Purbeck peninsula in the English county of Dorset. Built by William the Conqueror, the castle dates to the 11th century and commands a gap in the Purbeck Hills on the route between Wareham and Swanage.

One interesting fact about Corfe Castle is it was initially defended against an army (well, 500ish soldiers) by 5 people during the English civil war, including the wife of the owner and maids, until they could smuggle in some soldiers, which took the garrison to 80ish.

So this is kind of complicated - the village is called Corfe Castle on maps, road signs, etc. and it is Corfe Castle County Parish according to all the databases as one would expect. However, it is known by locals as 'Corfe' and it also happens that the castle is referred to as 'Corfe Castle' rather than Corfe Castle Castle.
