A coal-fired power station or coal power plant is a thermal power station which burns coal to generate electricity. Worldwide there are about 2,500 coal-fired power stations, [ 1 ] on average capable of generating a gigawatt each.

This is a list of the 212 operational coal-fired power stations in the United States. Coal generated 16% of electricity in the United States in 2023, [ 1 ] an amount less than that from renewable energy or nuclear power , [ 2 ] [ 3 ] and about half of that generated by natural gas plants .

Coal-fired plants produce electricity by burning coal in a boiler to produce steam. The steam produced, under tremendous pressure, flows into a turbine, which spins a generator to create electricity. The steam is then cooled, condensed back into water and returned to the boiler to start the process over.

The following page lists 83 of the coal-fired power stations (including lignite-fired) that are 3,000 MW or larger net capacity, which are operational or under construction. If a station also has units which do not burn coal, only coal-fired capacity is listed.
