Cloying | Community - BeerAdvocate
Sep 22, 2016 · To me, a cloying beer is overly sweet and lingers on the palate. It may taste good at first, but will be difficult to finish (for sure the second one will be-that happens to me with Sam Adams Octoberfest). Also, cloying beers may not just be sweet, but may be oxidized and have lingering raisin-y or prune-y flavors that I don't happen to like.

Most beer drinkers are familiar with the Dry Irish Stout, popularized by a certain brewery in Dublin. The Export Stout is a somewhat bigger version of this beer made to survive oceanic travel, yet still retain the dry, roasted flavors of the original without out being too sweet or cloying.

Chestnut Praline | Southern Tier Brewing Company - BeerAdvocate
Nov 2, 2024 · It was reminiscent of Amaretto Di Saronno liquor, but even more syrupy. Thick, slightly cloying body and moderate creamy carbonation. Bitterness was lost in the sweetness. Moderate alcohol heat. This beer had some interesting characteristics, but it was too sweet and cloying to be truly great.
Blitzen Holiday Ale | Maumee Bay Brewing Company - BeerAdvocate
Very nice complexity, robustness, and balance of dark/bready malt, spices, and fruity yeast ester flavors; with a great malt/bitter/spiciness balance and zero cloying flavors after the finish. Medium carbonation and medium-full bodied; with a very smooth, creamy/bready, and slightly sticky mouthfeel that is nice.
Malt Duck | Sprecher Brewing Company | BeerAdvocate
Lingering notes of concord grapes, fruit skin, wheat, cracker, light herbal, and yeast earthiness on the finish for a good bit. Nice robustness and balance of grape juice, pale malt, and light earthy hop flavors; with a great malt/bitter/tartness balance, and zero cloying flavors after the finish. Slight dryness from bitter/tartness and ...
Blended With Lumber #6 | Timber Ales | BeerAdvocate
Jan 18, 2025 · Dense, viscous pour, near-black color and opaque; incredibly thick, dense, brown head, tightly spongy texture; very long-lasting. Rich milk chocolate and chocolate fudge aroma; notes of cinnamon. A most tasty blend of German chocolate cake and fudge undercut with a light bourbon presence; coconut and vanilla aspects; sweet but not cloying.
Blended With Lumber #2 | Timber Ales | BeerAdvocate
Medium bodied with moderate creaminess, nice mouth feel. The aroma led me to think this might be a too-busy dessert stout, but the flavor is actually nicely integrated; both the bourbon and coconut are well balance with the rich chocolate malt body.Mid taste there was a wisp of caramel. Somewhat sweet, but not up to cloying dessert stout levels.
Assassin | Toppling Goliath Brewing Company | BeerAdvocate
Feb 20, 2012 · Dark chocolate fudge, coffee liqueur, vanilla, char. Quite a bit of heat. Becomes a bit cloying over time F -- Oily but not super velvety/thick. Makes for a smoother drinking experience O -- Definitely a standard bearer for the style given when it was first released. Split two ways this was still too much. It does get a little on the cloying ...
Doppelbock - BeerAdvocate
“Doppel” meaning “double,” this style is a bigger and stronger version of the lower-gravity German-Style Bock beers. Originally made by monks in Munich, the Doppelbock beer style is very food-friendly and rich in melanoidins reminiscent of toasted bread. Color is copper to dark brown. Malty sweetness is dominant but should not be cloying.
