'Chrome moly vanadium' is almost certainly to do with the steel the barrel is made of, while a "chrome lined" barrel is, well, lined with chrome for high wear and corrosion resistance in the bore and chamber.

Nov 21, 2005 · ORD4150, ORD4150-Resulferized, and Chrome-Moly-Vanadium (CMV) should not be confused with the generic term of a Chrome Moly barrel. My opinion and the opinion of the US Government (as defined by the Mil-Spec) is that one of the three is not better than the others. They are all they same and are all 11595 (Mil-Spec) barrel steel.

It would be much easier to understand if people would use the term "Lined" vs "Non Lined" barrels rather than Chrome Moly vs Chrome Lined. The barrel is made from the same material. As has been explained.

Each type of steel has strengths and weaknesses. -C.M. must be used for some of the lighter contours of barrels. C.M is also needed for customers wanting to "blue" the steel.

Apr 14, 2020 · Stainless doesnt need to be coated and chrome moly does to prevent rust. So instead of paying extra for coating on something that's going to need to be replaced, they just used stainless barrels. I think any good barrel maker can make an accurate barrel out of either. I have a chrome moly shilen and have no complaints.

Jul 17, 2003 · The stainless alloy(s) used for rifle barrels have good (not perfect) resistance to corrosion and are easier to machine than "chrome-moly" steel.The chrome-moly steel barrels have been around for some time and barrel makers are very experienced in using this alloy. Either alloy will make a barrel that will exceed your abilities to use it.

Chrome lined, chrome moly barrels have anywhere from 3 to 10 times the service life, according to military tests with machine gun barrels.

As I understand, the following trade off longevity~accuracy: Chrome Lined: Longest lasting/ process more likely to effect accuracy (less maintenance)

Aug 21, 2010 · This is enough time and temperature to harden chrome-moly-vanadium steels. The martensitic steels (400) are much more resistant to this but will still gas erode. For match work in the 5.56/.223 Rem, this is about 5000 rounds for 416R.
