In this review, we will focus on various immunological aspects of the interaction between chitin and host immune system such as sensing, interactions with immune cells, chitinases as chitin degrading enzymes, and immunologic applications of chitin.

With this review, we aimed to offer an overview of recent developments regarding the use of chitin and chitosan in cosmetic science and its applicability in hair, skin, nails, and oral care, also proposing the use of products containing drugs (cosmeceutical) as an alternative to the classic cosmetics, hoping for upcoming specific regulations.
