Jun 18, 2023 · After the slaughter of Navajo horses by the whites, Barboncito, working alongside Chief Manuelito, led an armed rebellion of 1000 Navajo warriors on Fort Defiance in Arizona in 1860; the Navajo very nearly succeeded and a short term treaty was achieved.

The famous Navajo “Chief’s” blankets are woven on a loom by Navajos, and some have been taken to museums for archiving. The weavings, made with yarn dyed with natural dyes, depict their history’s symbols, patterns, and cultural views.

Little is known of his life before he was selected headman in 1855 to succeed Zarcillas Largas (Long Earrings). He is thought to have been born near Bear’s Ears, in southeastern Utah, about 1818, (some say 1820), into the Bit’ahni (Folded Arms People) clan.
