Dec 13, 2020 · Cherusci is a name recorded before the C to H sound shift which is well attested, eg Cimmerland => Himmerland, and all suggested etymologies suggest Heruskaz was more likely. In the middle ages, people like Martin Luther thought the name was connected with the Harz region and that the name was something like Harzer.

Dec 13, 2020 · The Cheruci are likely in that large cultivated area south of Hannover, with pockets of other tribes as their neighbours. That doesn't mean that other earlier Cherusci didn't migrate southwards, joining some groups of the migration period. It depending on personal ambition, family ties, alliances and allegiances etc.

Remember that he had warriors from other tribes (Marsi, etc.) in his warband, and to our knowledge they had not contributed any warriors to the auxilia, and therefore would have been more lightly-equipped.

The Germanic tribes I am most interested are the Chatti and the Cherusci (1st century) and the Saxons (any time from their first mention until about the 10th century). As far as I understand, this Saxon name could have well been used among the Cherusci since some believe the Cherusci later merged into the Saxons and the Franks.

Sep 3, 2010 · If you look to maps, the first germanic nation that lived there were the Cherusci. But we cannot be definately sure. perhaps we have already Bructeri or Marsi. Archaeological evidence will not help us to identify single tribes. After the decline of the Cherusci in the end of 1st century AD it is said that the Chatti became neighbours of the Chauci.
