The motmots or Momotidae are a family of birds in the order Coraciiformes, which also includes the kingfishers, bee-eaters and rollers. All extant motmots are restricted to woodland or forests in the Neotropics, and the largest are in Central America. They have a colourful plumage and a relatively heavy bill.

Jun 2, 2021 · These elegant birds can be found mostly along the coast at or near large bodies of water such as Río Lagartos, Celestún or even in Mérida at the city’s aquaparque in the Vergel neighborhood. Species found in Yucatán include the snowy variety, the great blue, the red, and much rarer tiger heron.

The most conspicuous bird inside the cenote is usually the Cave Swallow, Hirundo fulva, shown above. All year round hundreds of them live in nooks and crannies at the cenote's bottom. Early each morning they start swirling around inside the cenote. When there's a big flock of them flying around they leave the cenote for their day's work.
