
Cedar Sticks - Walking Stick Forum
Jul 29, 2013 · The cedar sticks are stored in the loft of our barn. I expect by the end of the summer the sticks will be really quite dry. The temp has been about 95 deg outside for several days, in the barn loft about 125 deg. I checked the sticks last week and they do have a way to go. I plan to use a dust mask when I work on the sticks.

Aug 31, 2013 · I cut about 400 cedar sticks last winter, which I plan to make into walking sticks. The trees were between 10 and 13 years old according to tree rings. I cut the sticks along the side of the parkway. Last week I made about 15 sticks and they look great.

Colorful cedar stick - Walking Stick Forum
Jun 5, 2014 · This is cedar stick. It has a lot of colors in the wood. I have roughed out the face I am thinking of carving a bear or Eagles head on the top not sure yet. But with all the color in the wood I can not wait to see it with the finish on it. It is one of two cedar sticks I got from Stixman at Kentucky Walking Sticks. The other one is just as nice.

Sep 18, 2014 · Here is a finish I use on sticks that will get serious use, seems to protect them well. I take spar polyurethane and cut it 50/50 with mineral spirits. I wipe that on with a foam brush, wiping off the excess. Let dry and repeat, you can continue to build the finish with the wipe on with as many coats as you like, two coats seems sufficient for me.
Which woods are available in your area for walking sticks?
Dec 30, 2012 · This wood has only been planted about 15=20 years ago so abundent hazel there no one coppicing it.Looking out for the chestnut ,just love the colouration of the bark and it makes ideal sticks.They use the hazel to protect the young trees from wind as its fast growing. aHazel wood copice should be cut back every12-15years to keep it healthy

Mar 22, 2013 · One of the sticks I personally use most is a very simple oak staff, smooth, no embellishment. I noticed that after a year or so of use, the spar varnish had become hazy and sort of tacky where I held it. Also, a couple of sticks that I thought I had prepared correctly showed some small bubbles under the varnish after a year of sitting in storage.

Mar 7, 2025 · Most of my basic ones ,what I call field sticks, are mostly tung oil finished with some simple decretive carving just because I enjoy the carving. But made to be functional. I often do a textured grip using a small palm gouge. The round top make comfortable place for a top grip if needed. This is an eastern cedar stick . The face is just for fun.
