The six floor building was demolished before it was purchased by the Government of Canada. The embassy building was officially opened by Prime Minister Brian Mulroney on May 3, 1989. The building houses approximately 265 Canadian diplomatic and locally engaged staff.

The new Embassy of Canada in Washington, D.C. was designed by British Columbia architect Arthur Erickson. This decision generated some controversy as Erickson was handpicked by his friend, Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau, but the building itself was much acclaimed.

At 59 feet wide and 80 feet tall, the facade of the Moore House is a greatly enlarged version of a typical three-bay row house composition. Within this seemingly restrictive model, the architects created a complex and highly successful interplay between the three bays and sets of twos.
