Camp Abbot was shuttered in June of 1944 even though World War II was in full swing. The Army moved operations and consolidated at Fort Lewis, 40 miles south of Seattle. The camp, which was set up with water, sewer and other infrastructure, sat vacant until the early 1960s when developers purchased the property to redevelop it as a resort.

Eventually some 90,000 combat engineers would be trained here. In military jargon Camp Abbot was called an Engineer Replacement Training Center or ERTC.

Military officials established Camp Abbot, about 11 miles south of Bend, to serve as an Engineer Replacement Training Center (ERTC) in 1943, with soldiers first arriving for training in March. As many as 10,000 men could train at a time at the camp, with 90,000 men trained over its 14 months of operation.
