The City of Cambridge has officially launched its local Massachusetts 250 campaign, a City and statewide initiative to celebrate 250 years of America’s independence and Massachusetts’ revolutionary legacy.

Cambridge became a city in 1846, uniting three rival villages -- Old Cambridge, Cambridgeport and East Cambridge. Old Cambridge had grown slowly and still retained its charming rural character. Small shops catered to the community and to students.

Cambridge was founded to be the capital of Massachusetts. In 1630, the leaders of several Massachusetts Bay settlements could not agree which should be the capital. Meeting in Watertown on the last day of the year, they spotted a hill near the Charles River, just downstream, and named it Newtowne.

Jul 25, 2023 · Walk-in service is now being offered at City offices, and appointments for in-person services remain available on many days. Appointments are available for housing, zoning, business and entrepreneurship, Cambridge Energy Alliance, or other general planning matters.

Dec 17, 2024 · Cambridge residents and businesses who get their energy through the Cambridge Community Electricity Program will earn credits (Renewable Energy Certificates) for the emissions reductions from the solar farm.

Through the City of Cambridge’s Inclusionary Housing Program, income eligible households can access affordable rental and homeownership units in privately owned residential buildings. The program began in 1998 with the establishment of the Cambridge Inclusionary Zoning Ordinance.
