The action of the dart valve enables the bailer to collect cuttings for ID and recording purposes as per regulation 9903 as well as removing accumulating cuttings by dumping them in the mud spa.

The cable tool is a drilling “bit” that is repeatedly raised and dropped in the hole to break up any formation encountered. Then the cable tool is swapped out and a bailer is lowered into the hole.

Cable tool well drilling consists of dropping a heavy hammer/bit into the hole to smash through layers of dirt, sand, and rock to reach water. Each time the bit is lifted out, it is turned slightly and dropped again. Periodically, a bailer (bucket with a trapdoor bottom) is dropped in to remove mud, water, and crushed rock.
