Created by Wine Institute and the California Association of Winegrape Growers in 2003, CSWA is a nonprofit organization that implements the educational California Sustainable Winegrowing Program and administers Certified California Sustainable Winegrowing.

The California Sustainable Winegrowing Alliance (CSWA), Wine Institute and the California Association of Winegrape Growers (CAWG) report on the level of adoption of sustainable winegrowing practices in California every 5 years, beginning with the first report in 2004 and a subsequent report in 2009.

Sustainable practices - and Certified California Sustainable - are broader in scope, encompassing energy and water efficiency, employee relations, community engagement and more, while organic and Biodynamic ® go into greater depth on the areas of commonality.

CSWA launches a new website dedicated to the Certified California Sustainable Winegrowing program. Developed for trade, media, consumers and visitors who want to find sustainable wines, wineries and vineyards that are certified with a rigorous third-party audit.

The California Sustainable Winegrowing Alliance (CSWA)based 501(c)3 nonprofit organization incorporated in 2003 created by Wine Institute and the California Association of Winegrape Growers to promote the benefits of sustainable winegrowing practices, enlist industry commitment and assist in implementation of the Sustainable Winegrowing Program.

Commemorating the program’s 10-year anniversary, CSWA released the 2020 certification report, the 4th annual publication, which illustrates California’s global leadership in sustainable winegrowing, with the most widely adopted sustainable winegrowing programs in the world in terms of both winegrape acreage and case production.
