The GE C40-8W is a 6-axle diesel-electric locomotive built by GE Transportation Systems from 1989 to 1994. Often referred to as the Dash light series, it is part of the GE Dash 8 Series of freight locomotives.

Westbound Conrail SEIN-3 (Selkirk, NY - Indianapolis-Avon Yard, IN) is led by CR C40-8W 6063 on track number one near MP 122. In 1990 and 1991, Conrail liked to pair their C40-8W's with like units, maximizing the horsepower and fuel efficiency of these locomotives.

Jan 1, 2025 · The C40-8 model and its variants (C40-8W, C40-8M, and C44-8W/C41-8W) began General Electric's dominance in locomotive manufacturing. This reign lasted from the 1990s until GE sold its transportation division to Wabtec Freight in February, 2019.

The C40-8W's new "wide cab" or "comfort-cab" (the name depended upon who was saying it) was completely different from other General Electric and EMD locomotives at the time.

Apr 8, 2025 · So I’m trying to figure out what Railroads in the US purchased GE C40-8Ws and what the specs of each one were from the default specs from GE. I know the original Demo unit had a Tri-Window cab and was short-lived and was a B36-8 rebuild (at least I think it was a B36-8)
