Crisis Intervention Team Training (CIT) program is a community partnership of law enforcement, mental health and addiction professionals, individuals who live with mental illness and/or addiction disorders, their families and other advocates.

The New Jersey Crisis Intervention Response Network (NJCIRN) - Both active and retired police, fire and rescue personnel act as trained peer support counselors. The network coordinates a number of teams providing coverage to the entire state.

The CIT-NJ model strives to provide law enforcement officers and mental health professionals with knowledge and skills that allow them to respond to the individual in psychiatric crisis in a manner that minimizes the potential for injury.

Feb 1, 2022 · CarePlus NJ plays an instrumental role in the success of the program, spearheading the development and implementation of CIT trainings across Bergen County. To date, CarePlus NJ has offered 17, 40-hour CIT trainings in the county since 2016, with four trainings scheduled to take place in 2022.

The CIT program is designed to unite community law enforcement, mental health and emergency response professionals when an individual is experiencing a mental health crisis. This is achieved through the use of de-escalation skills and scenario-based training.

This partnership develops and sustains a 40 hour CIT certification program for its police departments and mental health providers in order to provide them with knowledge about mental illness, crisis resolution skills and access to community based services.
