Feb 5, 2006 · CIE (Córas Iompair Éireann) logo affectionately dubbed ‘the flying snail’. It was used from the 1940s to 1964 until it was replaced by the CIE roundel logo. Incidentially, the flying snail logo was reproduced in both left and right hand facing versions, no idea why!

Bus Átha Claith is responsible for the Dublin area bus services while Bus Éireann looks after the rest. Irish Rail, with its unusual non Gaelic title, became responsible for all the rail services within the Republic. A new logo was chosen with the initials IR resembling railway tracks.

CIE - History of CIÉ
Córas Iompair Éireann (CIÉ), was founded on 1st January 1945 under the Transport Act 1944. It united the Great Southern Railways (GSR) and the Dublin United Tramway Company (DUTC). The GSR operated rail, bus and lorry services.

The CIE logo (wheel of eight segments) was replaced by the IE logo on the black part of the loco. On coaches the words InterCity are shown in large white on the lower brown section. Craven coaches and ex-BR MkI generator vans continued in CIE black, white and golden brown.
Bus Eireann 'Expressway' services. - Flickr
A selection of images showing the 'Expressway' brand. The brand was introduced by CIE in the mid 1970's and had its own logo and colour scheme. Initially it was carried on 'M' class Leyland Leopards and wore an attractive livery of red and orange, with the expressway logo in black.
