Jul 7, 2007 · LAPD, LASD and numerous PDs all used roof lights starting in the 1950s; however, the CHP stayed with the red spots. There was a theory that overhead emergency lights would reduce patrol car accidents - NOT!!!! Every few years, some bright young chief - working on his master's thesis - will start a study to reduce accidents or injuries.

I am currently 24 years old and very passionate about making a career out of the CHP, I have had the same job for five years and have moved up in the company, I'm recently married and just received my AA and working on a bachelors. Never been arrested.

Don't forget the CHP patrols all unincorporated areas of the state and there are many parking violations, registration violations, etc. in those areas. The CHP cites under the vehicle code, county codes and municipal codes. All roads - all codes!
