Dec 5, 2022 · Perhaps the Khalkhas were the same Mongols as the Kalmyks and Buryats. Historical Kalmyks and Buryats did not call themselves "Mongols." They historically referred to themselves as "Oirat, Dzungars, Buryats, etc." And the Russians called these people Mongols only in the 19th and 20th centuries.
