Isle of the Dead (German: Die Toteninsel) is the best-known painting of Swiss Symbolist artist Arnold Böcklin (1827–1901). Prints were very popular in central Europe in the early 20th century— Vladimir Nabokov observed in his 1936 novel Despair that they could be "found in every Berlin home". [1]

He is buried in the Cimitero degli Allori in the southern suburb of Florence, Italy. Influenced by Romanticism, Böcklin's symbolist use of imagery derived from mythology and legend often overlapped with the aesthetic of the Pre-Raphaelites.

Böcklin’s patron Marie Berna commissioned this painting in 1880 as a memorial to her late husband. It is based on an unfinished canvas that she saw in the artist’s studio in Florence; at her request, he added the draped coffin and the shrouded figure to the rowboat in the foreground.

It’s more of a series of paintings than one single artwork though as the artist painted five different versions of the famous painting, along with a sixth that he did with his son Carlo in the last year of his life in 1901.
