Bland County is located in southwestern Virginia on the border of WestVirginia. The county is strategically positioned on Interstate 77 with the intersection of I-77 and I-81, 13 miles to the south of the county.

The Jefferson National Forest covers much of Bland County and the Appalachian Trail traverses its ridges and valleys. Bland County also borders southern West Virginia and is a hop, skip, and jump from the popular ski resorts of Winter Place and Snowshoe.

Bland County was formed in 1861 out of parts of Wythe, Tazewell, and Giles Counties. The County of Bland was established by an act of the General Assembly of Virginia on March 30, 1861 and is named for Richard Bland, a leader of Colonial Virginia.
